Hello, I'm

Jens Wiemann

Software engineer and part time freelancer

About me

Ever since I was a kid, I spent a lot of time with my father in his workshop. Building shelves, assembling cabinets, hanging pictures – working with our hands was simply part of everyday life. My father studied mechanical engineering and worked at VW, and I think that's where my joy of creating things with my own hands comes from.

At school, physics and mathematics were solid subjects for me, but they never truly captivated me. That changed in upper secondary school when computer science was added to the curriculum. Suddenly, I found myself spending far more time on my homework than was actually required – not out of a sense of duty, but because it simply wouldn't let go of me. I quickly realized that here, too, you can build things. Even with the most basic tools, it was possible to create surprisingly complex projects – a small Hangman game, for example. What fascinated me most was the elegance behind it all: how seemingly elaborate problems could be solved with just a few cleverly chosen lines of code.

The decision to study computer science was an obvious one. During my studies, it became clear that I was drawn less to management or pure research and more to the craft of building entire systems. My first internship at SAB introduced me to backend development and deployment on Azure. The internship turned into a freelance collaboration, and I also took my first steps into UI work – with the fascinating additional dimension of designing software to be not only functional, but genuinely user-friendly.

Another freelance engagement eventually brought me to DEVDEER, where I've now been a permanent employee for around nine years. It was here that I helped build my first public-facing React UI – and today, I'm responsible for the UI development within the team. Looking back, everything fits together neatly: from assembling cabinets with my father to designing complex frontend architectures, the same common thread runs through it all. Today, I've reached a point where I'm genuinely happy: I get to build cool things and solve tricky puzzles at work – and that's exactly what drives me.

Alongside my work at DEVDEER, I build Wait-in-Q, a digital queue for small local businesses that customers join by scanning a QR code.
